As you research and learn more about a topic, you will begin to consider the historical context of a topic to narrow the focus of your research.

In your initial post, do the following:

  • Share the topic you have chosen for the projects in this course with your classmates. Briefly describe the historical event you have chosen to analyze as well as the research question you will attempt to answer in your essay.
  • Consider your webtext reading about Québécois immigration. If you were researching this topic, what else would you like to know about the experience of the Québécois immigrants in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1870 that might not be covered in this piece?

This week we considered a topic in the reading and considered how topic exploration helps with historical inquiry. Respond to your peers by describing what you would like to learn about their selected topics. Explain what questions you have about the topic and consider what additional information would you need in order to understand the historical context.

2-4 Discussion: Historical Context and Your Topic

Morgan Gourley posted Mar 10, 2020 6:13 PM

I chose to research the topic of school desegregation, specifically the Brown v. Board of Education 1954 which was the first Supreme Court decision that struck down the idea of “separate but equal” which had been the rationale for racial segregation in American schools. I will be attempting to answer the question, How has Brown v. Board of Education affected segregation in schools today?. Although at first glance, most might see this decision as a step in the right direction toward ending racial segregation, doing some further research, it seems like there may be some draw backs to the landmark decision in schools today.

I guess I’d be interesting in learning more about how the Quebecois Immigration affected others. I’d want to ask questions like,

How did Quebec fair after so many Quebecois came to America?

What types of jobs did the Irish have to look for if the Quebecois replaced them?

How did the actions of the KKK influence politics at the time?

Week 2 Part 1 Discussion

  • Share the topic you have chosen for the projects in this course with your classmates. Briefly describe the historical event you have chosen to analyze as well as the research question you will attempt to answer in your essay.

For my topic historical event, I have chosen The Equal Rights Amendment.

The areas I will be attempting to cover are:

How women were treated before the proposal while gaining the right to vote.

How women were treated after the proposal.

How women’s lives changed during this time frame and being in the workforce.

How men’s attitude towards women during this time impacted work and home life.

Aside from covering those areas within my research question, I will also be attempting to answer the following question:

What happened during the 50-year span from the time Alice Paul proposed the first version in 1923 to 1972 when Congress approved The Equal Rights Amendment for ratification by the states and how did women influence this during this time?

As you can see, the areas I will be covering will fit nicely into this 50-year timeframe and will shape how those areas changed for women during this time.

Part 2 of Week 2 Discussion:

  • Consider your web text reading about Québécois immigration. If you were researching this topic, what else would you like to know about the experience of the Québécois immigrants in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1870 that might not be covered in this piece?

If I were to be researching the topic of Quebecois immigration, the main questions I would be wanting to answer would be:

Was there anything else that was appealing to Quebecois immigrants that drew them to America aside from finding a job? Was it better living conditions or?

Were they treated similarly to the Irish immigrants?

How much of an impact did they have with politics at this time? Were the growing numbers a factor for them like the Irish?

What kind of jobs (other than manufacturing) did they become established in and make a name for themselves?
